Modern humans consume an immense volume of information daily. News feeds, instant messengers, social media, short videos, and notifications accompany us almost without interruption. We have become adept at quickly locating the necessary data, yet we devote less and less time to deep reflection upon it. As a result, our brains grow accustomed to constant context‑switching rather than to focused intellectual work.
It should be noted that digital technologies, social networks, and artificial intelligence systems are not, in themselves, the cause of declining cognitive quality. On the contrary, they open up vast opportunities for learning, professional growth, and rapid access to knowledge. However, the effectiveness of these tools depends largely on how well‑developed a person’s critical thinking and capacity for in‑depth information analysis are. Artificial intelligence can generate numerous possible answers, but only a human being can evaluate their reliability, cross‑check facts, identify contradictions, and make responsible decisions.
When a person reads a book thoughtfully, several complex cognitive processes come into play simultaneously. Unlike the cursory skimming of short messages, reading demands sustained attention, active memory engagement, imagination, and analytical ability.
First and foremost, voluntary attention is developed. To grasp the content of a text, the brain must maintain concentration over an extended period, follow the narrative logic, revisit the author’s earlier points, and integrate disparate elements into a coherent whole. Such intellectual work becomes a form of training for the ability to focus—a skill that is particularly invaluable in professional settings.
Memory plays an equally crucial role. While reading, a person constantly holds previously acquired information in mind, compares new data with known facts, and constructs a systematic framework of knowledge. This process strengthens long‑term memory mechanisms and enhances overall retention capacity.
Imagination deserves special mention. Unlike watching ready‑made images or videos, a book encourages the reader to generate internal imagery, visualising characters, events, and circumstances independently. This active engagement stimulates creative thinking and deepens information absorption.
Simultaneously, the ability to perceive cause‑and‑effect relationships is honed. The reader continuously analyses characters’ motivations, anticipates plot developments, compares alternative scenarios, and evaluates the consequences of decisions. In essence, the brain models various outcomes, thereby fostering strategic and critical thinking.
These distinctive attributes of reading are corroborated by contemporary research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. American scholar Maryanne Wolf, who developed the concept of "deep reading," demonstrates that thoughtful interaction with text shapes complex neural networks responsible for analysis, reflection, and empathy. French neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene, in his works, convincingly shows that reading constitutes one of the most sophisticated forms of human intellectual activity, as it integrates the functioning of multiple brain systems involved in comprehension, memory, attention, and reasoning.
This is precisely why reading should not be regarded solely as a means of obtaining information. From a psychological standpoint, it constitutes a full‑fledged brain workout that cultivates the very qualities underpinning professional competence, sound decision‑making, and intellectual agility in an ever‑changing world.
In today’s environment, the competitive advantage belongs not to those who obtain information fastest, but to those who can interpret it, analyse it, and make well‑considered choices based on it. These qualities are becoming decisive both in the professional life of a civil servant and in the daily life of every individual.
Reading is far more than a beneficial habit or a form of intellectual leisure. Psychologically speaking, it is an effective instrument for developing critical thinking, attention, memory, emotional intelligence, and self‑reflective capacity. Regular, thoughtful reading helps preserve cognitive flexibility, resist informational noise, discern causal relationships, and arrive at more informed decisions amid high uncertainty.
As a practising psychologist, I am convinced that the habit of reading should be viewed as one of the most important investments in one’s own professional and personal development. It is not necessary to start with large volumes; dedicating just 20‑30 minutes a day to reading material that provokes thought, raises questions, and encourages seeking answers is sufficient. Over time, this practice becomes a natural form of brain training, fostering qualities that cannot be replaced by technology or artificial intelligence.
Technology will continue to advance, offering ever more opportunities for knowledge acquisition. Yet the ability to comprehend what we read, evaluate information critically, cross‑reference facts, and maintain intellectual independence will always remain a uniquely human trait. In this sense, the book does not lose its value – on the contrary, it becomes a reliable compass in a world where information grows ever more abundant, while time for its reflection grows ever scarcer.
