In the Mangystau region, a storm wind washed ashore 64 dead seals and five dead individuals of sturgeon species.

According to the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, on May 14, employees of the Department of Fish Inspection for the Mangystau region of the Zhaiyk-Caspian inter-regional basin inspection of fisheries in the coastal zone of the seaport of Fort Shevchenko on the territory from Cape Urdyuk to the Bautinskaya Spit area found 64 dead seals and five dead individuals of sturgeon species.

The press service of the department reported that the carcasses of animals and sturgeon fish were in the stage of severe decomposition, which made it impossible to take tissue samples for research.

"Samples of dead animals were taken for laboratory examination and placed in a refrigerator. Water and air samples were also taken," the department explained, suggesting that the death of animals occurred in winter.

The Ministry also recalled that at the end of April 97 carcasses of dead seals were found on the coast of the Caspian Sea.

Recall that carcasses of dead seals on the shores of the Caspian Sea are found not only in Kazakhstan, but also in Russia. In the first half of December 2020, similar cases have already been observed on the Dagestan coast, where more than 300 dead seals were found. Then experts claimed that the carcasses were scattered along the coast from Sulak to Izberbash after the storm.
