The Akimat of Almaty has finally responded to numerous complaints from residents of the metropolis about the unregulated movement of electric scooters and the lack of specific rules for their use, including parking.
Thus, the city administration initiated work on regulating the activities of electric scooter rental services.
As a result, meetings were held with representatives of the four largest companies that occupy 100 percent of the rental market of electric scooters in Almaty. During the discussions, in the interests of the residents of the city, a corresponding memorandum was concluded to ensure the safety of road users in Almaty.
According to the memorandum, the speed of electric scooters in the city is limited to 25 km/h with the help of applications, age requirements are being tightened – only persons over 16 years old will be able to rent electric scooters.
Operators will also ensure that electric scooters are not in the immediate vicinity of metro entrances, near public buildings, on lawns, roadways and pedestrian areas. Special parking lots will also be developed in the city. By the end of next year, it is planned to equip 3,000 parking spaces in the city.
The new rules will come into force within one month from the moment of signing the memorandum – until August 15 of this year.
It should be recalled that scooter rental services have been operating in Almaty since 2018. Currently, there are four companies on the market (Ozim, Jet, Eleven, Whoosh) that provide 15 thousand electric scooters for rent. Today, about 100 thousand trips on electric scooters are made in the city every day.
